Like many lawyers, I have always loved books. When it comes to books on advocacy and starting and growing a company or business, my reading choices fall into two distinct categories. First, there are books for startups that focus on unique ideas and emerging trends that I can easily apply to my practice. I’d put those books in the commercial porn category – they’re quick reads and have a lot of great ideas for lust. The second category is books that move me. The ones I return to again and again for wisdom or comfort. Here is a sample of some of my recent content below:

If you’re a fan of Seth Godin, his latest book, Marketing: You Can’t Be Seen Until You Learn to See, won’t disappoint—and, in fact, it’s quickly become one of my favorites. Godin’s book provides examples of successful marketing ideas, but more importantly, it shows you how to troubleshoot why your marketing might not be working. A deceptively light quick read, I found myself returning to the book time and time again in the two weeks since I devoured it.

Subscription services are gaining attention for law firms these days. As I wrote years ago, subscription services provide a recurring stream of revenue and keep you hooked. What’s not to like? When we think of subscription services, we often think of a customer paying a set monthly or annual fee for a specific menu of services—and while these are just a few types of subscription services, there are many more, all in an automated client: create have been discussed. A subscription service in every business by John Varillo. The book covers nine different subscription models, most of which can be adapted for use by a law firm. Warrilow’s book is a quick read with lots of examples from the business world. A strong recommendation if you are interested in adopting a subscription model.

If you want to find out if your subscription model will sell, you might want to pick up a copy of Alexander Osterwalder’s book Creating Products and Services People Want, which has lots of tips and graphics on how to evaluate your business idea. But by far, my favorite book is Osterwalder, and it’s still a permanent fixture on my bookshelf after three years. These are also potentially applicable to law firms and can at least bring a new perspective to your business.

Today, many lawyers are eager to “scale” like other startups. But there is something to be said for staying small. That’s the subject of two recent books that highlight the business world trend of profitable small businesses that don’t intend to get bigger. The Million Dollar One Person Business by Elaine Poffeldt The growing number of one person, million dollar businesses and profiles of several business owners in various fields who have used this process to create businesses 6 and 7, for details Pay more attention to my review. ). And in January 2019, Internet entrepreneur Paul Jarvis’s A Company of One: Why Staying Small Is the Big Idea is next. Jarvis is well-known on the internet and has been very successful, so even though I haven’t read the book, I feel confident recommending it here.

Many lawyers are risk averse and are more inclined to refrain from doing something than to just try it. If you find yourself slipping into that space, Shanda Rhimes’ book, The Year of Yes, is for you. Shonda Rhimes, creator Gray’s Anatomy and many other TV credits, explaining how saying yes to everything for a year changed her life. And while many of us don’t have lives like Rimes’ to begin with, this book is a fun, happy read, and wonderfully relatable.

And finally, if you want to make 2019 the year you start your own law firm, be sure to check out my book Solo by Choice: How to Be the Lawyer You’ve Always Wanted to Be.

Don’t have time to study? This is not an excuse. Many books are available in audio format, so you can listen to Audible while driving or exercising. A great way to multitask.

Finally – although not directly related to starting or running a law firm, I wanted to include two other legal practice related books on the list that I really enjoyed. First up is Michelle Obama’s extraordinary memoir, Becoming, which offers guidance for female lawyers looking to build a life and career where they can be the best version of themselves. Second, I include Taiari Jones’ American Marriage, a harrowing story about the consequences of wrongful imprisonment: even when the accused is acquitted, life cannot go back to the way it was before. #gallery-3 { margin: auto; } #gallery-3 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; Width: 50%; } #gallery-3 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-3 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* See gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Enjoy reading – and best wishes for a Happy Hanukkah!
