So what if lawyers could match the occasional need for office space with available and underutilized capacity?
For example, maybe a group of individuals want to start a monthly legal clinic for startups but can’t find a place to host it? Or maybe you want to host a one-on-one group for a hands-on learning session. Or maybe you want to sponsor some kind of festival or get together for existing customers. Or even experiment with an after-hours law firm that’s only open at night or on weekends.
Finding short-term space is not as easy as you might expect. Many virtual office spaces are not accessible after working hours. And those spaces that do have 24-hour privileges usually only do so for full-time tenants—so you have to pay full-time rent for part-time access, which doesn’t make much sense. Likewise, many law firms and existing businesses are reluctant to rent out space on a part-time basis, even for a fee, because of the potential hassles and liabilities.
But, like nature, entrepreneurs hate a vacuum. So now a company called Made in the Lower East Side (MiLES) has stepped in to fill the void of casual, after-hours space with a pop-up office concept. MiLES targets unused retail space or landlords between long-term leases, transforming the space into a variety of possibilities with modular displays, desks and bookshelves – from a designer fashion boutique to an art space to traditional classrooms. Where MiLES has already met its fundraising goal of $33,000 to pay for rent, insurance, logistics and manufacturing of its products, it can employ landlords to unlock underutilized space.
