Through Bob Ambrogi’s Law Sites blog, I came across another study by Captain Obvious about diversity in biglaw. Spoiler alert (NOT): Little progress or improvement has been made over the past seven years. Although the percentage of minority partners at large firms is about 26.4 percent—so slightly less than 30 percent of minority graduates—only ten percent end up being promoted to partner. There is simply no excuse for such a record.
However, even as the legal profession works to improve diversity and inclusion in biglaw, once again, we ignore minority lawyers who start their own firms. There are countless examples – from KMR Law Group, the successful black woman-owned Chicago firm that was launched with a tweet and was profiled in The Atlantic, to the myriad of black law firms found online here or here. A simple Google News search, and a year ago, almost half of the speakers at the Lawyer Mom Owner Summit were minority lawyer-mother-owners who had great success with their ventures.
While academics may be puzzled as to why minority lawyers are content in solo practice, from my perspective, I’ve never understood why we don’t celebrate, encourage, minority-owned law as we try to attack diversity in the Constitution. And we do not respect. Corporations as another path to equality in the legal profession. However, this is changing. For example, consider:

Make no mistake, diversity in biglaw is an important goal. But if we focus on competition in the legal profession, we miss opportunities to truly change our profession and the law itself for the better.
